Excerpt:  As she priced new bunk beds for her three children, Angela Phillips of Westland, Mich., realized something: The beds cost a whole lot more than she wanted to pay.  "My income has not changed," said Phillips, 32, who works in the operations department of a cable company. "It's just that things are more expensive. I'm spending more money at the grocery store. I'm spending more money on gas."So the single mom decided to do something that more shoppers are doing in these tough economic times.  She decided to buy used furniture.  "Budgets are tight," she said. "I'm just trying to save a penny."

Excerpt:  Stationary upholstery vendors here are introducing collections with so many options that consumers won't have a reason not to buy. At least a half-dozen upholstery suppliers are rolling out DIY (design it yourself) upholstery programs this week that allow consumers to insert their own personalities and style into sofas and chairs. And Bassett is offering a second generation of customization, having introduced its first DIY collection several years ago.  The B212 Multiples sofa from Broyhill can be given a completely different look with the substitution of backs, arms, legs, cushions and other options. If the choice of hundreds of fabrics wasn't enough, manufacturers are now allowing consumers to select everything from arm, leg and back styles to cushion construction, length (from Texas long to apartment short) and details like fringes and welting.
