Two more states have joined the “gigawatt club,” according to the first-quarter report from the American Wind Energy Association — but Texas remains firmly in the lead.

The list is comprised of states with more than a gigawatt of wind-power generating capacity.

The US wind industry has passed the 20,000-megawatt (MW) installed capacity milestone, achieving in two years what had previously taken more than two decades, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) said, increasing 10,000 MW since 2006. Wind now provides 20,152 MW of electricity generating capacity in the United States, producing enough electricity to serve 5.3 million American homes.

West Texas may receive a boost because of President Obama's stimulus package, which allots more than $550 million to the state for the research and development of renewable energy technologies, including wind energy.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will provide an estimated $215.4 million through the State Energy Program. The funds are allotted to "areas critical to the development of clean, efficient American energy, including modernizing energy transmission, research and development of renewable energy technologies and modernizing and upgrading government buildings and vehicles," according to a Democratic Policy Committee news release.

Those critical areas will primarily be in West Texas, Wortham said.

Excerpt:

Windmills and solar panel arrays have become symbols of America’s growing interest in alternative energy. Yet as Congress begins debating new rules to restrict carbon dioxide emissions and promote electricity produced from renewable sources, an underlying question is how much more Americans will be willing to pay to harness the wind and the sun.

Curbing carbon dioxide emissions — a central part of tackling climate change — will almost certainly raise electricity prices, experts say. And increasing the nation’s reliance on renewable energy will in itself raise costs.
